Victorian 'Days Patent' Portable Screw Top Brass Fan Stand with Concealed Fan: Concealed with a brass tube which slides into a metal stand normally for Chimney ornaments. English Gothic "Chimney Ornaments". Used to protect a lady's make-up from the heat of the fireplace c1830-1840. The shafts are telescopic, and each contains a folded silk sheet which opens out to make a small circular screen (10" diameter). The brass mounts were fitted into the top of the shaft.
