America - The War Of 1812 interesting letter dated June 17th 1813 from an English lawyer to his brother discussing various family matters but mentioning that a niece was about to be married to a British Army Captain and then adding that ' the place where he lived has been taken by the American Army and I do suppose that my brother and Betsy must have made their escape along with General Sheaffe, whom my brother was well acquainted with for many long years…' The letter then contains a long denunciation of war. The mention of Sheaffe, one of the prominent British Generals during the 1812 war, pinpoints the place described as York in Upper Canada - which was attacked by a substantial American force in April 1813, forcing Sheaffe and presumably the people described in this letter to flee. The rest of Sheaffe's force was captured by the Americans and the town looted, leaving to considerable criticism of Sheaffe in his actions. Letters mentioning actions in the 'forgotten American war of 1812' are rare
