Lancashire - Accrington - a fine archive of documents all relating to the death and legacies of John Hargreaves of Broad Oak, Accrington - an extremely wealthy industrialist who owned quarries and mills in the area, and on his death in 1873 left an estate valued in one of the documents of just under £200,000 (about 13 million today). The archive includes valuations, lists of his considerable shareholdings (mainly in railways) probate documents, settlements, appointments of trustees etc, and a leather-bound ledger listing tenants with rentals in his various estates, mills etc. Papers relating to John Hargreaves are deposited in Lancashire Archives. He was clearly a most important figures in this area of Lancashire at the height of the Industrial Revolution, and this archive will doubtless provide considerable information on this important area of the Northwest at this time
