He was born in Ludlow, and his family home was Croft Castle near Leominster, now in the care of the National Trust. But his greatest achievement was the development of the Haford Estate, at Cwmystwyth, Ceredigian near to Aberystwyth which is now considered to be one of the finest examples in Europe of a picturesque landscape
