WWII - The original Operation Diary of Number 10 Squadron Air Delivery Unit, RAF covering the period April 15th 1944 to July 29th 1944, folio, 141pp, marked 'Secret' and stamped by RAF Official Censor 869. An outstanding record of the day to day operations of a much forgotten feature of the RAF during WWII. The Air Delivery Units were responsible for delivering the aircraft from the factories to the operational air bases around the country. It was while she was flying with the ADU that pioneer aviator Amy Johnson was killed in 1941. The present logbook covers the crucial period of the War which included D-Day, and provides a fascinating insight into the daily operations of pilots who were particularly brave - as they had to be able to pilot whatever plane which was needed - flying a Spitfire one day and a Wellington Bomber the next. The entries are remarkably informative, not only, as one might expect with the official operational details, but also comments on activities of personnel - with many less than complimentary remarks, providing a vivid picture of what it was really like at the front end of operations in the War. At the end of the log there is a 'rogues gallery' of personnel who were black listed from the unit, with comments as to why: 'F/Lt Ferguson/ F/O Jones - generally being bloody nuisance. Ferguson should know better, but Jones probably doesn't being merely an ignorant little boy…' A volume which will doubtless yield important new information about the operations of the RAF during WWII
