Cuban History - c1960s 'FIDEL' Photograph depicting Uniformed Cadets spelling out Fidel on the beach - together with a Photograph of Four female uniformed cadets, whom featured within the 'FIDEL' formation, both photographs measure 12x18cm approx., both with hand written inscriptions to reverse dated 1961. The four cadet photograph translates, "…These are Carmela, Odesa, Gladys and Daisy. Varadero 7 June 1961 'The Year Of Education'…", the 'Fidel' formation photograph translates"7 June '61. At Varadero, when we went there for a few days then afterwards went to the countryside to teach the labourers who don't know how to read and write. Daisy Santiesteban 1961 'The Year of Education!'..." -The Cuban government of Fidel Castro at Che Guevara's behest dubbed 1961 the "year of education" and sent "literacy brigades" out into the countryside to construct schools, train new educators, and teach the predominantly illiterate guajiros (peasants) to read and write. Provenance: Offered as part of the sale of a Private Museum the 'JagdamerMuseum', this private collection was previously based in Cuba, has been composed and is owned by a British Businessman and discovered within an Estate sale in Cuba.
