Joe Smith (1890-1956) – West Bromwich Albion 9 carat gold medal Division 1 Champions - The Football League to the front; to the reverse West Bromwich Albion FC 1919/1920 J Smith and hallmarked; approximately 29mm diameter weighing 20 grammes. The 1st and only season the Albion have captured the top league position as champions; scarce item by the nature of the achievement. Very good. Joe Smith joined West Bromwich Albion in 1910 and was a team member of the Albion team winning Division 2 in 1911. World War 1 disrupted all football in the UK with Joe, amongst many others, serving in the forces as part of the war effort. Football returned in 1919/1920 with Joe holding the right back position for the Albion; he was chosen and played for England in the international v Wales. West Bromwich Albion were Division 1 Champions at the end of season 1919/1920, the season remembered for two main facts, it was Albion’s 1st triumph as champions, and to this day, the only season that the club has achieved the top league prize. Joe Smith played in all but two games in 1919/1920 and his reward for his consistant match performances is the football league medal which is now the subject of our auction.
