An extremely rare little work, it measures approx 14cm x 9cm x 2cm, bound in attractive full contemporary (or near so) panelled calf, with gilt detail and red title label to spine. Either neat hinge repair or possible rebacking. There is a chip to top of spine, else a handsome volume. Internally the front endpaper is pulling a hint to rear. The frontis has been cropped a little and there is a crease to title page. There are a couple of brown marks to one prelim leaf. The map has some pale browning/foxing and has crease to top corner. This is the first English edition of this history of the Wars of Montrose by George Wishart, first published in Latin a few years earlier. George Wishart, was a Scottish historian, and minister, born in 1609. After refusing to take the covenant, he was deposed, and was imprisoned on several occasions. A few months afterward the latest imprisonment, when James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose, had "swept away the whole military force of the covenanters, and was approaching the capital in triumph, Wishart was one of a deputation of cavalier prisoners, whom the terrified citizens assent to him to implore his clemency". He then remained with the Marquis as his chaplain, during the remainder of the campaign, and to have afterwards accompanied him abroad in the same capacity. This work is based upon these battles and adventures. James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose (1612-1650) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier, who initially joined the Covenanters in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, but subsequently supported King Charles I as the English Civil War developed. From 1644 to 1646, and again in 1650, he fought a civil war in Scotland on behalf of the King and is generally referred to in Scotland as simply "the Great Montrose”
