Very scarce historic Doleman stamped hand hammered guttie golf ball c1850s - see K McGimpsey “The Story of The Golf Ball” - note the first painted gutties seen in Musselburgh were in the possession of Mr Doleman who obtained them in Edinburgh and the maker’s name was P Paterson. Note: The ball may well have been stamped to denote ownership, W Doleman Snr who ran the race stand and was certainly a golfer, but was probably not a ball maker. There was only one member of the Doleman family who was involved in professional club making (and so possibly balls) and that was Frank, born 1848.
