Hugely Rare 1906 Springbok’s Tour Scrapbook: A substantial hard covered professionally bound volume, c. 11” x 9” x 2”, half bound in dark red leather to spine and corner tips, very solid boards, title in gold to black label stuck neatly to spine for Jacob(us) S Le Roux, Springbok wing and tourist in 1906-7. The vast majority of its 192 pages have been carefully filled with contemporary cuttings from the British and S African press: daily and weekly papers, periodical pictorial magazines and so on. Every word that was findable in welcome, preview, speculation, match report and review, triumphant return home and general comment seems to have been included, with several familiarly iconic full page spreads, drawings, cartoons, poems, caricatures and photographs. Spectacular images of the size of the farewell & welcome home crowds are included, and the densely-written match reports and comments (including the wins over Wales and Ireland, draw with England and defeat to the Scots) give a clear impression of the times and of the interest taken in these first S African tourists and their talents. A splendid and important piece of memorabilia and huge research source all in one place, lovingly preserved 115 years on. (The accounts of the British Lions of 2021 to S Africa will doubtless be fully available online)! In remarkably good condition for its age and evident regular reading, the edges of cuttings folded to fit tending to fray a tad, but all wholly legible and rewarding to the careful handler. Not many such will still exist, one feels sure: a magnificent chance for the S African or wider collector
