Signed Americana – Smithonian Report 1856 with inscription in ink ‘Geo Sykes from Professor Jo’s Henry of Smithonian Institution 12th to 20th 1858’, the report is further signed by Geo Sykes on the title page and again on page 45, all appear to be in the hand of Henry. This would be from Joseph Henry, first Smithonian Institute Secretary and physicist who conducted pioneering research in electro-magnetism and development of the telegraph. George Sykes was a General during the American Civil War. The book contains the report of the Secretary, ancient Indian remains, meteorology, recent progress in physics all with text illustrations, in embossed cloth, marked with some damage, some pages foxed and toned
