Extremely rare Hardy Bros Alnwick Tournament Alloy Fly Reel “Longstone Type Salmon” c1930s – 4.5” dia with heavily ventilated drum plus 4 large quadrants cut out of the back plate – still retaining the Longstone standard production drum securing nut and locking screw- no check mechanism - all original and used only for tournament casting – hence very few made. Note see John Drewett “Hardy Brothers – The Masters, The Men and Their Reels” p.527 showing similar reel used in all probability in Salmon Fly Casting Events where distances of 45yds plus might have been expected – whereas The St George 3.75” similar construction was used for Trout Fly Distance Casting – only 24 St George Reels were made but doubtful if many Salmon reels were made – because the reduced strength would not have stood up under actual fishing conditions.
