1884 The Pigot Case Book – Report of the Case Pigot vs

1884 The Pigot Case Book – Report of the Case Pigot vs. Hastie as before the High Court, Calcutta; containing the official documents, the evidence and the judgments in the original and appellate courts (The Only Correct Edition) Calcutta together with A Correspondence Between Rev. W. Hastie And Prof. Kali Charan Banurji And The Editor Of The I. C. Herald Calcutta: Printed by P. N. Shaha at the Herald Press 1881. These two rare publications relate to a cause-celebre of Victorian Calcutta. Rev. William Hastie [1842-1903] fell out with a Miss Mary Pigot employed by the Scottish Ladies Association of Calcutta. One source claims Hastie was trying to expose the poor management and morals of Miss Pigot of the Zenana Mission School and Orphanage. Hastie claimed that the (allegedly) Eurasian Pigot was illegitimate and she was having an affair both with a native Christian teacher at the Free Church college [Kali Charan Banurji] and a Professor Wilson at his college. Hastie and Pigot both went to court, with Hastie defending himself on libel charges by calling on supportive witnesses. The case was sent to appeal, and eventually Hastie and his witnesses were rebuked. He unsuccessfully appealed to the church in Scotland. He had already been dismissed in 1884 and had no way of covering the fine and costs that the court levied against him. As a result, Hastie was imprisoned in Calcutta in 1885 and was released only when he went bankrupt.
