Vizier Ali Khan Or The Massacre Of Benares - A Chapter in British Indian History Published anonymously but actually by John Frederick Davis - Printed in Benares at the Medical Hall Press in 1881. First published in 1844, this is the second edition "printed in a limited number of copies, chiefly for the supply of private friends and relatives." A Rare Indian Imprint pp. vi, 100 + Lithographic frontispiece showing the house in which the author's father Samuel Davis defended himself. The back cover carries the picture of the spear with which the author's father defended himself. Paper-covered printed boards with cloth strip for spine as originally issued. Complete but somewhat chipped and worn. This is a curious little work about the massacre of G F Cherry, British political agent at Benares, and two other Englishmen in 1799 by Vizier Ali Khan, the deposed Nawab of Lucknow, and his henchmen. After the massacre the party proceeded to the house of Samuel Davis, the magistrate, who defended himself hiding behind the stairs holding an Indian spear. It is the same Samuel Davis who was also the artist who travelled to Bhutan in the 1780s and did a book of views which were drawn by the Daniells based on Davis's sketches.
