India & Punjab – ‘The Eldest Son of the King of Delhi’ Original Engraving 1857 by…

India & Punjab – ‘The Eldest Son of the King of Delhi’ Original Engraving 1857 by William Carpenter 36x24cm mounted on card. W. Carpenter went to India in the 1850’s and produced much artwork, he returned to the UK in early 1857 and sold many of his paintings to the illustrated Newspapers, because post and first hand drawing and descriptions from India took approx. 8 weeks to reach the UK, his work was used to Illustrate India during the mutiny period. The V&A Museum purchased much of his work from the Newspapers in 1883, which was fortunate because the Germans destroyed the London Newspaper premises in WWII and the originals would not have survived, as is true of many woodblock illustrations. The V& A museum hold the original of this work and engravings after Carpenter are unique to this period.
