India & Punjab – 1857 Mutiny Account - A fascinating typescript manuscript account of the Indian Mutiny by Colonel A.R.D. Mackenzie CB, Honary ADC to the viceroy, 3pp. The account is a memoir by Colonel Alfred Robert Davidson MacKenzie of his dear comrade and friend Captain Charles Stanford of the 5th Punjab Cavalry who had just succeeded Young-husband [who himself had been killed at Futtehgarh (Fatehgarh Cantonment)] and formed part of the Mounted Brigade under Sir Hope Grant and attached to Sir James Outram’s force. The account mentions how on the orders of Grant, Sandford went to attack a group of rebels at a village outside Lucknow and how he was shot on his forehead, and then describes the gallant effort by a young officer R.B.Campbell who singe handily went in to recover Stanford’s body amidst being shot and wounded. He was recommended for a VC but it was not awarded. Macknzie also describes the obelisk which was erected at the Lucknow-Fyzabad road to ‘Charles Sandford late of the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry who led a dismounted Punjab Cavalry in an assault on a fortified place near Lucknow and on the 10th March 1858 met a soldier’s death’
