India & Punjab – John Lawrence & Council In India - Two 19th century albumen photographs of the Governor General and later Viceroy of India Sir John Lawrence in council in India, c.1860s. The large photograph has all the council identified including Henry Noran, Henry Durrand, Edward Bailey, John Stratton, N.Taylor, Lushington, H Norman, H.Rose, and Sir Robert Napier. Lawrence was part of the Punjab Residency after the defeat of the Sikhs in the First Anglo Sikh War and victory at Sobraon John and his brother Henry Lawrence was made the Resident at Lahore. Sir Henry Hardinge appointed Lawrence to govern the newly-annexed Jullundur district and Hill-States regions of the Punjab after the first Sikh war.
