India & Punjab – Maharajah Ranbir Singh of Kashmir - A rare 19th century albumen portrait photograph of the son of Raja Gulab Singh, Maharajah Ranbir Singh (1830 –1885) - Photograph dates from 1877, Delhi Durbar of 1877 to proclaim Queen Victoria as Empress of India. Measures 22cms x 13cms. Ranbir Singh ‘s father was the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir state, who had been a courtier of the Court of Lahore during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit up until Maharajah Duleep Singh. Ranbir Singh ascended the throne in 1856 after Gulab Singh's abdication due to his poor health. He allied with the British during the Sepoy Mutiny and also sent his troops to help the British to besiege Delhi. He was subsequently rewarded for his allegiance during the mutiny.
