India & Punjab – Nawab Of Maler Kotla Photo - An original albumen photograph of the Nawab Maler Kotla, Punjab, by Fred Bremner, Lahore, c.1900. The Princely state was a unique example of religious harmony in the Punjab. The roots of which date back to 1705, when the younger sons of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, were ordered to be bricked alive by the governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. His close relative, Sher Mohammed Khan, Nawab of Maler Kotla, lodged vehement protest against this inhuman act and said it was against Islam. At this the Nawab of Maler Kotla walked out of the court in protest. Guru Gobind Singh on learning this kind and humanitarian approach profusely thanked the Nawab of Maler Kotla and blessed him and his Kingdom. In recognition of this act, the State of Maler Kotla did not witness a single incident of violence during partition.
