India & Punjab – Travels in Punjab by Mohan Lal Book - Rare first edition of Travels in the Panjab, Afghanistan and Turkistan, to Balk, Bokhara, and Herat; And a visit to Great Britain and Germany., 1846, with Frontis portrait of Mohan Lal and later title page. Mohan Lal Zutshi (1812 – 1877) was an Indian traveller, diplomat, and author of Hindu Kashmiri Pandit who accompanied Alexander Burnes to the Punjab during the reign of Maharajah Ranjit Singh, and was seen as a Spy who was gathering military intelligence for the British. He visited the Court of Ranjit Singh in 1831, and wrote extensively about their meeting, also about various Sikh courters, Akalis or nihangs at Lahor, crossing the Indus , meeting General Ventura and Avitble at Peshawar, and then to Amritsar, Loodhian and then Delhi. Mohan Lal Zutshi had learned Farsi in Delhi and travelled in the garb of a Muslim, under the pseudonym of 'Aga Hassan Kashmiri' or as 'Mirza Quli Kashmiri' in Persia, Punjab and Afghanistan collecting information vital for his British superiors. Bound in contemporary black half calf with marbled boards and gilt titles to spine, frontis toned with a chip to the side and an early full page hand annotation or inscription to the reverse. There seems to be an ink signature of Mohan Lal to the inside of the front cover possibly in author’s hand.
