To Which Is Added “The Report Of Mr. Leather On The Projected Line Of Railway” Printed by Wm Boag, Dean Street Chambers, foot of Dean Street, Newcastle. 1829. First Edition. A detailed 229 page book with 2 plate illustrations of the intended Railway and of Elswick House. Also 4 fold out hand coloured maps and plans. The book being a full account of the evidence given before the Parliamentary Committee under Lords Viscount Lowther the Chairman, containing extensive details regarding the railway. In quality and expensive rebinding with pig skin half leather and gold tooling and marble board binding which must have cost the previous collector a lot to have it so attractively bound. Size 6” × 9¼”. The Newcastle & Carlisle was the first line across Britain and the earliest long distance line until the London and Birmingham was built. The proposed line was supported by Benjamin Thompson, a colliery owner and engineer. Despite a lot of opposition, the line was authorized in May 1829 and fully opened in 1838
