1849 Robert Stephenson Railway and Civil Engineer Signed note with the inscription ‘I have this morning seen Mr. R. Shaw who has described to me his method of piling iron for the manufacture of rails which I consider an improvement on the plan now generally adopted, yours truly signed Rob Stephenson’ to the other side of the note the letter explains Mr. Shaw once again explaining his method which appears to be very satisfactory and hope to order again dated 1849, with various calculations to the other side of the noted paper, Robert Stephenson was an early civil and rail engineer, the only son of George Stephenson ‘Father of Railway’ and built on the achievements of his father. this is accompanied by a leather wallet and a further letter with no apparent relevance (3)
