1904 Manchester City FA Cup Winners Medal to S B Ashworth 15 carat gold, weight 20g, the obverse has two footballers on opposite sides of the shield with the year 1904 below. To the reverse it has “The Football Association”, to the border relief the engraving states “English Cup 1904 won by Manchester City. S B ASHWORTH (Left Half)”. Comes complete in the original case by Whittle of Blackburn – Goldsmith and Medallist. Note: SAMUEL BOLTON ASHWORTH (1877-1925) Manchester City signed Samuel Ashworth from Stoke in the summer of 1903 and he played his first game for City in September 1903 v Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 4-1 win. During season 1903/1904 Samuel made 18 league appearances and played in the early rounds of the FA Cup but lost his place to William Holmes in the quarter final and semi-final games. Manchester City travelled to London for the FA Cup Final match on 23 April 1904 and they assembled in the dressing room at Crystal Palace prior to the kick-off. Manager Tom Maley gathered the players together and proceeded to announce the team: Samuel was chosen to play with William Holmes to be a spectator and watch the game. Holmes reacted angrily by throwing his football boots through the dressing room window as he left the area. Manchester City dominated the game and won 1-0 against Bolton Wanderers with Billy Meredith scoring the only goal. Samuel Ashworth signed for Everton on 23 September 1904, the Cup Final therefore being his last game for City
