Rare 1842 St Legers Winners yellow metal and enamel commemorative whip handle top - enamelled in blue, green and yellow and applied with four cold thistles, the base applied with four gold cartouches engraved “Blue Bonnett - St Leger - 1842” overall 1.25”h – some inevitable wear to the enamel on the top surface itself – weighs 19.8gms – also comes with Christies Catalogue see lot 270 which sold and had a guide price of ?600-?800. Note Blue Bonnett was the winner of the 1842 St Leger, ridden by Tommy Lye and owned by Lord Eglington. Lye was stable jockey to Lord Eglington who rode winners of the Oaks four times and the St Leger twice. Lord Eglington, a Scottish peer probably gave this handle decorated with the Scottish thistle as a commemorative piece to his successful jockey, an appropriate gift as the latter was renowned for his use of the whip.
