Emily Eden, a skilled water-colourist, accompanied her brother, Lord Auckland to the Sikh Court of Ranjit Singh when he was Governor General from 1835-1842. Her letters, later published in Up the Country, reflect her acerbic wit and keen observation of her surroundings.
