India – Sikh history. A rare image of Raja Suchet Singh (1801-1844) mounted on an oval brass frame inset into a black leather covered bi-folding velvet padded case, complete with rear recessed stand. The youngest of the Dogra trinity, Suchet Singh rose to high positions at the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The son of Miari Kishora Singh, he started his career at a young age, appointed to the duty of laying public petitions before the Maharaja in the wake of his elder brother, Dhian Singh. In 1818 he attained the important office of Deorhidar or Chamberlain to the Royal household. He lacked the political and administrative ability of his brothers, Gulab Dhian Singh, yet he won the favour of Ranjit Singh by his handsome bearing and engaging manner. He was also made the commander of the Charyari Sowars, Ranjit Singh`s crack cavalry brigade. Miniature 4cm by 3cm. Frame 12cm by 10cm.
