India – Sikh History. A painting of the young Maharajah Duleep Singh (6 September 1838 - 22 October 1893) on paper, mounted in a glazed round frame, complete with suspension loop. The striking portrait depicts the Maharajah in his teenage years and captures the anguish at having been torn from his beloved India. Maharaja Ranjit Singh's youngest son he was the only child of Maharani Jind Kaur. Exiled to Britain at age 15 he was befriended and much admired by Queen Victoria. Duleep Singh's arrival on the shores of England in 1854 threw him into the European court. 8cm in diameter.
