Military Lancashire – autograph – James Douglas, 4th Earl of Hamilton letter signed by Hamilton to a Mr Fleetwood advising him that 52 recruits are to be raised for service in his brother the Earl of Orkney’s Regiment and that the bearer, Captain Hamilton is to be given every assistance in obtaining the recruits. James Douglas had a distinguished military and political career, though he died in a duel with Lord Mohun in 1712. The Earl of Orkney referred to in this letter gained great distinction in Marlborough’s battles on the Continent particularly at Blenheim.
