Chartist Newspaper – Chartists – The Champion – William Cobbett bound volume of editions of this rare Chartist newspaper, based on the political ideas of William Cobbett – covering the period November 1836 to May 1837. Boards loose and worn some water staining to a few pages but interior contents appear generally good throughout. A rare and important publication – one of the most important left thinking journals of the early 19th c with considerable number of reports on the deprivation of the working classes, the treatment of child labour, the progress and rejection of the poor laws and the infancy of the Trades Union Movement. In this regard, there are reports of the progress of the Tolpuddle Martyrs- referred to as the ‘Dorchester Labourers’ who were the iconic symbols of the deprivations of the working classes and the foundation of the entire Trade Union Movement. An important and valuable historical record.
