London – Newington Green – Will manuscript list of the legacies of Samuel Wright of Newington Green, who died on July 29th 1736, leaving a vast fortune. Written in a legible hand on a leaf of paper, folio, erosion to right hand side, affecting a few words only but leaving the document substantially complete. Sent as a letter to the Rev Mr Yardley of Highgate. Samuel Wright, son of a nonconforming minister in Nottinghamshire and a writer on theological issues was regarded as a ‘very eminent divine among the Presbyterians’ and lived at Newington Green until his death. In his will, reviewed in this document, he left almost ?21,000 (almost ?2million in today’s money) for philanthropic causes such as ’40 decayed families’ ‘to cloath & apprentice 20 poor boys’ and ’40 widows upwards of 50 years old’. Also included were sizeable bequests to various Prisons including the Fleet, Ludgate Whitechapel, and Marshalsea – as well as equally sizeable bequests to various hospitals including Bethlehem and the London Workhouse. In addition to these bequests he also left vast estates in the East Midlands to various members of his family and money to his servants.
