Brunel – the Great Eastern – tragic death of the Commander. Two issues of the Bristol Gazette, Jan. 26 & Feb 2, 1860 carrying reports on the death of the Commander of the Great Eastern, Captain Harrison, who together with Dr Watson, surgeon, Captain Lay, Ogden and others were crossing The Solent in a small boat in order to join the ship when they were overturned by a ferocious squall. Heroic efforts by Watson failed to save Harrison and others were also lost [detailed account in Jan. issue page 2). Account of Harrison's funeral in Liverpool where it was estimated 30,000 people lined the streets (account in Feb. issue, page 2). Disbound otherwise in very good condition.
