1938 England Cricket XI (v Australia) signed signatures - on Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club official headed paper from the 1st test at Trent Bridge - signed in ink by WR Hammond, K Farnes, H. Verity, N.W. D Yardley, L Ames, CJ Barnett, Denis Compton, WJ Edrich, E Paynter, D Wright, A.R. Sinfield and Len Hutton (VG). Note once again this was a remarkable test series with several records being broken to include at that time the only occasion on which 4x English batsmen scored hundreds in the same innings in the series, and at 20 years and 19 days Denis Compton was England’s youngest century maker. Hammond scored 240 in the 2nd test making the highest score against Australia at Lord’s at that time. Hutton’s score of 364 in the 5th and final test and partnership of 382 with Leyland remain England’s record against Australia, their partnership being the best for any wicket he also batted on while a record of 770 runs were scored and made England’s 100th century against Australia – and finally it still remains England highest total (903) in one innings, and margin of victory remains a record for all test cricket.
