Lawn Tennis Silver-plated tankard trophy by James Dixon & Sons - with hinged lid engraved, “Riding Mill Lawn Tennis Club – Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Pairs – Won by – Mr & Mrs W.O.E. Meade-King – 14th. August 1886.” Riding Mill is a small village about 16 miles away from Newcastle-on-Tyne in Northumberland. Sir William Oliver Evelyn Meade-King was a competitor in the early ‘Northern Lawn Tennis Association’ tennis tournaments at Kersal, Manchester, and at Liverpool. He was born in 1858 and died on 10th. April 1940, aged 82. The tankard measures 15.3 cm high. This lot includes copies of two obituaries outlining the notable events during his lifetime. Also included with this lot is a trophy tankard engraved, “COCOS 4th Quarter 1919 American Tennis Handicap Doubles – A H L Savage & C H Wookey (4)
