Nottinghamshire Political The Newark Election 1840 quantity of ms and printed papers all relating to the Newark Election of 1840 including lists of voters, all of whom are allied to particular pubs in the town, various legal documents, a bill of expenses by the chief constable, messengers lists etc. A fascinating political archive, with some general wear otherwise in good condition. Note: According to contemporaneous newspaper reports, the outcome of the election was questionable with one news report suggesting: '...how was the Newark Election carried - by hogussing electors and carrying them off while insensible to distant places...' The fact that the majority of the elector lists in this archive are allied to the pubs in the town would seem to bear out this claim!
