A J Balfour, Prime Minister 1902-05, did a huge amount to popularise golf in England in the 1890s. Note Tom Browne was an extremely popular English strip cartoonist, painter and illustrator of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods whose works were reproduced in many forms in books, postcards and advertising, often with a golfing theme including the Famous Johnny Walker figure. Browne was a founding member of the London Sketch Club, was publicly acclaimed and was made a Royal Illustrator.
