FLY TYING CHEST: Early black japanned fly tying chest, similar to that described in Kelson’s “The Salmon Fly”, pages 457-8 (being one of three fly boxes he used and recommended), this example made by Rollason, Hatton Garden London in black japanned tin with leather outer case to base, 17” x10” x15” tall, side carry handles, hinged lid opens to reveal a cream interior, a card sampler 16” x9” fits neatly to underside of lid, large selection of assorted coloured seals fur as described by Kelson in many articles, rear of the sampler case hand written details by Kelson and Fane re his rods, Castle Connell & Spey casting rods and associated writings, dates c1895, a parchment and card hackle album, 15” x9”, having 8 sides of coloured dyed hackles as often used and described by Kelson, hand written notes(Fane?) to front page cover, various velum and parchment envelopes containing turkey, peacock and vibrant died feathers, 6 removable varied compartment lift out fitted japanned trays containing a quantity black salmon fly irons in sizes 1, 4/0,5/0 & 6/0, varied tinsels on wood spools, and a good mixed selection of tying feathers inc. Bustard, Red Kite, Golden pheasant Amherst, Turkey, white tipped turkey, Argus, Pieta Sardida, Grey peacock, Jungle cock cape, Mallard, Parrot Teal, wood duck and Farlow’s Mallard ,considered by Kelson as never bettered in quality.
