Studdy, Geo E (b.1878 - d.1948) A CARTOON OF 'BONZO' THE PUP - pen, ink and watercolour signed and inscribed "All the best from Bonzo" and dated '24 - image 6"x 4.5" - overall 11.75 x 9.5". Letter of provenance verso from Alfred Walton Foster, the Nottingham artist, stating thus: "This original 'Bonzo' pup by G.E. Studdy was given to me (in exchange for one of my watercolours) by G.E. Studdy after a day's fly fishing at Caythorpe on the Dover Beck. The previous evening G.E.S had given a talk to the Nottm. Soc. Of Artists. Alfred W. Foster". Note: Studdy developed his most famous character within the pages of The Sketch. 'Bonzo', the mischievous white puppy, first appeared with that name on 8th November 1922, and became so popular that he was reproduced in many forms in books, postcards and advertising, often with a golfing theme.
