May, (Phil) Philip,William RI (1864 - 1903) TWO GOLFING CARTOONS - pen and ink on paper - both signed and bearing gallery labels verso for W Russell Button, Chicago - images measure 9.5"x 7.75" and 6.5"x 10" and titled "Satisfaction" and "Disputation" - overall 16.5 x 14.25". Note: Phil May was an illustrator. He was born at Leeds where he started his career as a scene painter at the Grand Theatre. He worked in Australia on the Sydney Bulletin 1885-88 and returned to England and became a successful black and white artist. He contributed to The Graphic from 1890 and to Punch from 1893. He was a member of the New English Art Club and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. May also worked in France, Italy and America. Several of his works are in the Tate Gallery.
