Wain, Louis William (1860-1939) "FORE!" OR THE SCOTTISH GOLFER - pen, ink and watercolour on paper bears the signature and date '09 - image 19"x 14.5" overall 26.5 x 21.5" featuring the anthropomorphised wide eyed cat. Note: Louis Wain was a painter and illustrator of cats. He received little formal education but studied art at West London School of Art 1877-80 and taught there 1881-82. He began to draw cats in 1883. He joined the staff of The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News in 1882 and The Illustrated London News in 1886. Soon his name as a humorous cat artist was immensely popular and well known. His later years were dogged by mental health problems.
