WWII – Autograph - Rudolf Hess extremely rare autograph letter signed with initials ‘R.H.’ dated April 27th 1947 written in pencil on a slip of paper approx 7x4ins, clearly cut from a larger document. This note was written at a time when Hess was just about to begin his life sentence in Spandau Prison. This is the only example of a letter written from him at this time that we have ever seen. In it, he repeats a request for a fresh pair of braces and a button to be sewn on his overcoat. The nature of this note bears out the character of Hess, who was one of seven prisoners who were assigned to Spandau prison in July of the same year as this note. Hess was regarded by his guards as the laziest of the seven, and a man who regarded menial tasks as below his dignity. Together with original envelope bearing the address to Frau Hess and overprinted with the Spandau Allied Prison mark and stamp for the prison to verso.
