WWI a fine collection of letters, papers and other ephemera relating to Naval Signalman…

WWI a fine collection of letters, papers and other ephemera relating to Naval Signalman William Wheatley and including an original Naval Signal announcing the Armistice on November 11th 1918. The collection also contains a number of letters, some extensive, to Wheatley while on active service, a collection of original snapshots taken by him, mostly at Basra in the Middle East, together with various items of ephemera including a leave ticket, an identity pass etc. Original signals conveying the Armistice message are now becoming increasingly uncommon on the market. The present example is Wheatley’s top copy, written by him in pencil on a pre printed form. It was sent from the CinC in Bombay to his naval unit based in Basra. The letters are also of interest. There are several from his sweetheart describing day to day conditions at home as well as letters from members of his family – one of whom appears to have succumbed to Spanish Flu in 1918. There is also an extensive letter from a friend who describes the reactions of people at whom on receiving the news of the Armistice.
