WWII – Royal Artillery a particularly good group of approx six letters written by Gunner…

WWII – Royal Artillery a particularly good group of approx six letters written by Gunner J Nicholson serving in Northern Europe with 188 Battery, 75th Anti Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery, British Liberation Army covering the period October 1944 – May 1945, and providing a considerable amount of information on life in the liberating army as it made its progress to the final defeat of the Nazis, and detailing relationships between the soldiers and the local people as well as describing the aftermath of the war in Germany: ‘....we were the first troops into Antwerp and when we got there we had a sack of tomatoes, stacks of pears and apples and eggs given us on our way...they all got their wirelesses out that they had hidden away because they were supposed to hand them all in...I have just been watching about 2 or 3 thousands Lancaster bombers going over to bomb Germany...we are still taking plenty of prisoners, quite young lads 16to 20, the SS, nothing is bad enough for them. We passed through one town one day and there was 40 to 50 civilians shot dead by them, and I went to have a look in at them and two old ladies came and shook hands with me and started crying...no one has any idea only us lads what war is like and our regiment has had its share, when I think of my pals that has gone down, just imagine my feelings towards these SS guys we have behind the barbed wire...’
