Edward VI – Oxfordshire – Manor of Huntercombe fine document in his name, dated 1550,…

Edward VI – Oxfordshire – Manor of Huntercombe fine document in his name, dated 1550, bearing a large portion (about 50%) of the Great Seal. Document in Latin written in a neat secretarial hand on a single leaf of vellum approx 34x14cm. The seal, in white wax shows the enthroned King on the obverse and the King on horseback in full armour with greyhound below on the reverse. Document in fine order, one small portion torn away from the fold up strip to base affecting one word, but not affecting the body of the document. A licence of Alienation granted to Richard Taverner for the sum of 44 shillings and one penny allwing him to sell the lease of the Manor of Huntercombe, Oxfordshire, to Thomas Spyer of Huntercombe. The Manor was in a much later aged bought by the motoring pioneer William Morris (later Lord Nuffield) and endowed on Nuffield College, Oxford which he founded. The college later sold the estate. Richard Taverner was a religious reformed and often preached before the King. Documents in the name of Edward VI, the boy King successor to his father Henry VIII are now becoming increasingly rare on the market, and this is a particularly fine example.
