Maritime – naval – a naval Lieutenant’s pay 1828 an original payslip issued to Lt David De Sausmarez serving aboard the Alligator at Madeira for the period July 19th to October 10th 1828 – showing that he was paid £27.12.0d. The middle of the form is the bill of exchange which he has signed in duplicate for transmission to London for his pay to be sent to his banker. This Lieutenant was probably a member of the famous Guernsey based family of that name which included Admiral Lord Sausmarez who not only was a distinguished commander in his own right but who took over the Victory after the death of Nelson.
