Ireland – the Manchester Martyrs an original artwork in coloured chalk on board depicting the three martyrs, Larkin, Allen and O’Brien, each shown hs in ovals surmounting a scene showing the attack on the Police van in Manchester on September 18th 1867. The arrangement of this piece of artwork is in accordance with the published posters showing the three martyrs which appeared at the time. There is no indication on this item to give a date when it was produced, but the board appears to be consistent with the type of board used during the 19th c, and it could be that this was an original sketch which formed the basis of the published images or was produced as a basis for a marching banner. Provenance: this has recently emerged from a collection in New York. There are a few cracks to the edges of the board consistent with age but the image remains intact. Approx 20x16ins
