Royalty – A fine calligraphic document with a complete example of the Great Seal of Elizabeth II – former Home Secretary Merlyn Rees is raised to the Peerage – superb calligraphic document dated July 1st 1992, written in colours with gold embellishments, and featuring a beautiful calligraphic initial letter ‘E’ enclosing the Royal Coat of Arms, and also the text incorporating a white rose and dragon device (for Wales). The document, written on a single leaf of vellum raises Merlyn Rees, statesman and Home Secretary under the Callaghan Government from 1976-79. Attached to the document by its green cord is a fine example of the Great Seal of Elizabeth II contained in its red morocco covered skippet which also features the gild embossed Royal Coat of Arms. The seal features a depiction of the Queen in full regalia on the Throne on the obverse and on horseback on the reverse – this is a traditional image of the monarch which has been used on Royal Documents in Great Britain since the early Medieval times. The whole is contained in its original red morocco covered custom made case measuring approx 23x18 ins. Documents bearing the Great Seal of Elizabeth II are ironically some of the rarest Royal documents to appear on the market. It is also of extraordinary rarity to find a document such as this which raises such a high profile figure to the peerage. A quite magnificent document of a type which rarely appears for sale.
