China – slavery An original employment contract for a Chinese Slave worker dated 1857, printed in Spanish and Chinese characters with ms insertions, including a long ms evaluation of the worker’s performance (this counted if he was eventually to achieve his freedom and his prize of Cuban citizenship). The worker in question was just 13 years old at the time the contract was drawn up, and he was clearly being pressed into work at a plantation as a vignette showing Chinese workers in the fields with a plantation sugar processing house in the background surmounts the document.
