An Apprenticeship Indenture for an Oyster Dredger – aged 10. Essex Apprenticeship indenture 1779 for James Layzoll to John Andrews to be an apprentice oyster dredger in Essex. Pre printed document on a single leaf of paper, with embossed revenue stamp, and ms insertions. In fine fresh condition, approx 13x8 ins. Layzoll was a poor child of the parish aged just 10 and his enforced apprenticeship which in those days was akin to a prison sentence, was to last until he became 21 years old. If he broke his apprenticeship before then he could be imprisoned and publicly whipped.
