The game, which was drawn 0-0 (the first in international rugby), was played in front of 5,000 spectators in melting snow and incessant rain. 20-a-side was played up to 1876 and changed to 15-a-side in 1877. The four players missing from the group are CHR Vanderspar, JEH Mackinlay, F Luscombe and H Marsh. It is believed that this is the earliest set of autographs ever to have been offered at auction.
