England Rugby team autographs 1873 16 signatures in pencil on watermarked paper are MW…

England Rugby team autographs 1873 16 signatures in pencil on watermarked paper are MW Marshall, FW Mills, WRB Fletcher, H Freeman, CW Boyle, S Finney, S Morse, F Stokes (captain), AStG Hamersley, ER Still, D Turner, JA Bush, CH Rickards, HA Lawrence, JA Body and EC Cheston. Note These signatures are of 16 of the 20 England players who played in the third ever rugby international – against Scotland at West of Scotland Club, Glasgow on 3rd March 1873. The game, which was drawn 0-0 (the first in international rugby), was played in front of 5,000 spectators in melting snow and incessant rain. 20-a-side was played up to 1876 and changed to 15-a-side in 1877. The four players missing from the group are CHR Vanderspar, JEH Mackinlay, F Luscombe and H Marsh. It is believed that this is the earliest set of autographs ever to have been offered at auction.
